Alright, diald is up and running and works pretty well. I have 2
questions about the packet filter.
1) in phone.filter, Eric states:
# We time out domain requests right away, we just want them to bring
# the link up, not keep it around for very long.
# This is because the network will usually come up on a call
# from the resolver library (unless you have all your commonly
# used addresses in /etc/hosts, in which case you will discover
# other problems.)
My ISP has given me 2 name servers, but all my commonly used addresses
for my local net are in /etc/hosts. Does this apply to me?
2) At times, when my ISP is busy, diald will never hang up. tcpdump
shows a lot of packets coming across which, probably, don't apply to me
but are keeping ppp active. Can anyone look at this partial dump and
tell me which rule to add? If I just need to roll up my sleeves and
learn TCP packets please tell me. If that kind of knowledge takes a
lifetime to learn, then tell me that too :-)
