        nohup tcpdump -t sl0 -o output.txt &
        
This allows tcpdump to continue running after you log out.  Man nohup for
options, etc.  The shell is a process leader and the tcpdump command is a
member of the shell's process group.  When a process leader exits, all
other members of the group receive a HUP signal.  Any process that does
does not handle this signal will be terminated.  nohup merely ignores the
signal. Read Stevens APUE for more information, if interested.
