Thank you for you advice!

I have done as you suggested and added an entry for my sl0 device in the 
hosts file. I have also added options in my named.conf file to set it up as 
a forwarder.

Now I am no longer getting any root server queries that will not keep the 
link up unnecessarily.

However I noticed in my /var/log/messages file that when I am online and 
named clears its cache, I can see that it is listening on ppp0, sl0 and 
eth0. I find this to be slightly uncomfortable. Named should be for local 
use ONLY and therefore listen ONLY on eth0. Is there a way to restrict it 
only to eth0, if so I think it would prevent any other situations causing 
diald to come up. This could also improve security.
