At this stage you either get errors from external commands
logged or you don't. There are several external commands that
might be run, several of which are user supplied shell scripts,
so there are *many* possible errors. Best to log them.

  Eventually it is possible, even likely, that diald will stop
making any pretence of trying to set the interface metric and
will only set routes on kernels that don't do it themselves.
