That is incorrect. The ppp_compress modules compress the data using either
bsd compression (I think it is the same as Z-compress) or deflation (the
same as gzip, I think).

VJ compression uses no extra modules. ppp-compress needs the following
aliases in /etc/modules.conf (or conf.modules):

alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 slhc

Under all the setups I've done, I've needed to SIGUSR2 the pppd once ip
comes up to get it to actually use compression. Don't ask me why... maybe
its a bug with ppp-2.3.5.
