No, thats the problem.  I am having to initiate ppp connections manually.

I just checked syslog again and I am getting 16 messages about being unable to locate 
module tap.

modprobe: can't locate module tap0
modprobe: can't locate module tap1
modprobe: can't locate module tap2
modprobe: can't locate module tap3
...

this keeps going on till tap15 at which time it displays the message about 
siocsimetric operation not supported.  Some people mentioned to remove a "metric" 
option from the diald.conf but I can't see what they mean. My diald.conf file is 
listed below.....

mode ppp
connect /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/diald-connect
device /dev/modem
speed 115200
local 192.168.1.1
remote 102.168.1.250
dynamic
netmask 255.255.255.0
include /usr/lib/diald/standard.filter
