Thanks to you and a private message, the problem is solved.
The other message pointed out that my ISP, AT&T WorldNet wants CHAP
authorization and pointed me to the following link:
http://www.wurd.com/wurd/software/dialers/linux.html
Per these directions, I added the following to my chap-secrets file:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] * "password"
This link also shows a pppd script which uses the pppd option you suggested
I add to diald.conf:
pppd-options name UserName #replace UserName with your PAP Login
ID
With these changes, the connection works. What is surprising is that when I
configured ppp with Linuxconf in RH6.0, I selected PAP authorization (there
is no option for CHAP) and it entered my login and password only in the
pap-secrets file. Yet the manual login still worked and, based on the pppd
debug output included in my first message (attached below), it appears that
AT&T changes from CHAP to PAP. Still, this is not the approach they describe
in the wurd link.
Anyway it works now.
