Hello, I have installed RH6.1 upgrade over my
perfect 6.0 installation and in the process broke
Diald.
Basically I just want to ask if _anybody_ has
diald working correctly on RH6.1 & PPP 2.3.10-x
yet. I've seen alot of complaints on this in
dejanews
I have tried to follow the "fixes" I've seen but I
have more than one source of error in my setup,
and I can't sort it out.
I have put "noauth" in /etc/ppp/options -so I no
longer get the error from "remote process failed
to authenticate, couldn't get suitable secret"
But still Diald won't work right-I think I've got
a routing problem still. I had an ethernet card
detected during the upgrade and a lot of my
network settings have been changed.
Here's what happens with Diald and also a relevant
detail. Diald dials in, connects, starts link and
the diald process starts pppd, pppd runs but times
out withhin a few seconds and the modem hangs up
and redials.
Here is the other clue: starting X up from console
shows hostname lookup failure. If I have diald
daemon running, starting X from console results X
waiting while diald is dialing up (the isps
nameservers i guess) Other means of starting ppp0
besides Diald also fail. Trying to activate ppp0
from netcfg results in a script error message
*/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0 failed
to activate* BUT rhat's new WvDial will work.
WvDial has a conf file that doesn't really say
anything aboput how it is able to get authority to
route the pppd ->ppp0 but it does have a file I've
never seen before for PPP: /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial .
I made a file /etc/ppp/peers/diald thinking ppp
will only accept orders from programs with a file
in this peers directory but that didn't fix it.
You can tell I don't know squat about networking
by now so I'll go ahead and disclose all my
laughable misconfigurations.

I have tried switching values for 127.0.0.1 and
192.168.1.1 in /etc/hosts. I have used Linuxconf
repeatedly to set/reset the 'use dns for normal
operations' (should be off since I am not running
named?) I have whacked any gateway value for eth0
in netcfg. I have verified that diald.conf has
'defaultroute' in its list for options to pass to
ppp. Nothing seems to affect either the hostname
lookup failure, or the inability of diald to route
the pppd to the ppp0 interface.
Any suggestions or advice appreciated,
