Thanks in advance for more suggestions. Below you'll find my configuration
files.
But I don't think they are the problem. They worked with a cheap no-name
internal modem just fine. It must have something to do with the way chat
talks to the USR modem. USR-s have many features not found in other
brands. The system is dual-boot (linux+w95) and w95 has no
problems of this kind. Minicom talks to the modem at 38400 - no problems.
When I do "speed 38400" in diald.conf I still see lost characters.
