Thanks for the tip - it works! I can now move on to tuning diald.
I also found that John Adams' suggested fix works. It enables /dev/ttyS0 to be used.
So the choice seems to be either to accept the error messages about using /dev/cua0
or to patch pppd in order to use /dev/ttyS0.
