The problem is probably that diald sets up a default route (via either
the SLIP or Ethertap interface.) Recent versions of pppd default to
requiring the remote (ie your ISP) to authenticate if there is already
a dedault route set up when pppd starts. The solution is to add the
option 'noauth' to your ppp options file.
