Rod,
I've only played a little with named, and never figured out how to serve the
addresses of mail and news hosts, which are not part of my local network..
The Name Server Operators Guide "implies" that you cannot change ORIGINS in the
named hosts file. Therefore, not allowing your named to serve-up addresses outside
of the domain in which the name server resides, except for those that are cached.
Maybe someone else has an idea.
Why not "push" a common /etc/hosts file to each host in your network via rcp or ftp
or you could run NIS and establish the appropriate maps. In either of those cases
you would have to "visit" each host.
