Brad, 

I had a problem like this when I first put up diald, I fixed it when
I removed ALL ppp options from the ppp options file except for the following:


   asyncmap 00000000 
   name username #<-- login name on ISP (passwd is in the secrets file) 
   remotename ppp0 

All other ppp control options are specified in diald.conf...
