Pat,

What is /dev/modem linked to?  It should be linked to /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1
whichever your modem is attached to, not one of the cua devices.  On second
thought, it may be better to use one of the /dev/ttySx devices in your
diald.conf instead of /dev/modem.  It worked for me with RH 6.1.
