hmmm ... they have pulled the answer out of the PPPD man page.  This
is a sign that the remote end did not start its PPPD quickly enough,
and the line was dropped.  Your modem then 'talks to itself' and the
pppd software detects it is NOT connected at the remote end, and
issues the "[pppd]: Serial line is looped back." message.

... turn up the debug level, and it should show _when_ the problem
arises.
