Hey, I have the exact same USB chip (Afatech af9005), same OS (Ubuntu 7.04), possibly different architecture (I'm on PPC), but I have had no problems whatsoever with the card.
The only thing I could suggest is that there isn't a signal for it to pickup, I find the little tiny antenna that shipped with mine picks up next to nothing.
