Have you tried MPlayer? According to http://mp.dev.hu/MPlayer/DOCS/TVout-
G400 it works fine with a Matrox G400 and the framebuffer driver (I don't
need X on my video recorder ;-) Now, a Matrox G400 will be hard to find,
does anyone know if the method described in the above document works with
the newer model G450, too?
