Since all this is mostly unbuffered it may be necessary to use a buffering program like buffer in that pipe, but I don't have much experience with that. I think some people on the list have played around with that a lot more than I have. You can also try ts2ps /dev/ost/dvr 0 0 | buffer |mplayer - or without buffer.
