I guess you could simply write -include $(wildcard *.d) dummy so even if the wildcard expansion doesn't result in any file names, there's still 'dummy' (which most likely doesn't exist). The '-' at the beginning will suppress any error message about the missing 'dummy'. The name can, of course, be made more complex to reduce the chances of such a file being there. Even "/dev/null" apears to work - and in that case the '-' at the beginning could be left out.
