no, it's the opposite way: There are some cards with the same subsystem id but different frontends out there, so we have to use the i2c addresses to perform this probing - that's the only 'machine-visible' difference between the LG, the Alps and the Philips-frontends based on the stv0299.

Or the vendor encoded this info in eeprom or GPIO.

This is again specific for the PCI cards and won't work for any SetTopBox containing the same frontend.
