no, it's the opposite way: There are some cards with the same subsystem id but different frontends out there, so we have to use the i2c addresses to perform this probing - that's the only 'machine-visible' difference between the LG, the Alps and the Philips-frontends based on the stv0299.
Or the vendor encoded this info in eeprom or GPIO.
