Sounds good.
For frontends this would also allow the addition of new hardware with new parameters/properties (e.g. ATSC) without changing any ioctls.

until now the term frontend was used similiar to NIM or Network Interface Module. Since a LVDS or HDD input is rarely a network interface the term 'input' is probably much better and more intuitive...
