I'm not sure about this. For the inversion setting this approach works well, but would basically we need something similiar for all _AUTO parameters if we want to provide a consistent API...
And probing all parameters can get pretty expensive.
I agree, it doesn't scale well.
In the big scheme of things it should probably be the responsibility of something like the scan app to try all the different combinations from user space and provide a "known good" list of FE parameters to apps like vdr.
