Are there any examples of how to do it with other DVB cards? I suppose other cards need the i2c interface also.
No, other cards don't have a Bt8x8 chipset and don't use bttv at all.
Unfortunately, there is not that much sysfs code in the kernel at the moment, because it was introduced in late 2.5 kernels.
