Of course it shouldn't, I was just not sure how to fix that best and
whenever the not-supported zero length writes are in the i2c protocol
specs or if that is actually a bt878 limitation.

bttv tests for i2c chips (msp34xx, ...) using reads, and it works
pretty well for ages.
