It seems that with that patch applied it doesn't build anymore
w/o separate object directory:

$ make
...
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.5-mjb1/build O=/lib/modules/2.6.5-mjb1/build 
SUBDIRS=/home/js/src/linuxtv-external/dvb-kernel/build-2.6 AV7110_FIRMWARE= 
AV7110_OSD=y
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-mjb1'
  Using /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-mjb1 as source for kernel
  /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-mjb1 is not clean, please run 'make mrproper'
  in the '/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-mjb1' directory.
make[2]: *** [prepare1] Error 1
