[linux-dvb] How to read from /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 ???

I have tried using fopen() and open() to open /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0  but it 
always returns NULL or -1, respectively.  How exactly is it that I am 
supposed to read from /dev/dvb/adapter0/dvr0 ??

I have already successfully tuned the device by using azap prior to the 
fopen() or open() calls.
