Aha. Browser history is a wonderful thing. The USB chip has written on it:
CY7C68013A
As in:
http://www.digchip.com/datasheets/new_parts/200409/1077565.php
Also, there is another strange shaped thing (i.e. not a surface
mounted chip). It has HD BF36A1Dc written on it. It's approximately 2
or 3mm high off the board, 1mm deep and maybe 10 or 12 mm wide. It is
soldered onto the board on the 10x1mm side, black, with the writing on
the side-facing 10x3mm side. Again, couldn't find things online.
Does that help?
On a different track, I checked it works in windows, and managed to
get into linux with the stick in hot (firmware loaded state).
