I've built diskless Java client (root system is part of it) couple years ago
than wrote howto's draft. Since I believe there are enough "embedded"
howto's already I never ironed/published it, but if it can be of any help

I bet you're running glibc. Libc5 distribution worked fine for me, but when
I moved to glibc I've got same problem like you. Until feaguring this out
I'm just running it in single user mode.
Have a look at discussion going on on [EMAIL PROTECTED], there
are a few hints. When I get some time will try to fix it, if you do it first
