One big advantage of rpm files (don't know about deb) is that they
include the prinstine tarball.  rpm2cpio on an rpm will spit out the
spec, the patches and the original tarball.  If you don't like the spec
or the patches, compile the tarball yourself and treat the spec file as
hints on what might go wrong.
