I've used icecast to do live streaming in mp3 format.    For embedded
applications, the best audio source I can think of is shout, which comes with the
icecast distribution ( http://www.icecast.org ).   For live streaming, we use
liveice, which also (used to?) come with icecast.    Unfortunately, using icecast
requires you do decode an mp3 first, which is a bit CPU intensive.
New RealPlayers can decode the mp3 stream just fine, as can certain windows Media
players, winamp, mpg123 (of course!)...
