mknod during install

I'm trying to make my machines come up talking via the linux screen reader 
'speakup'. To do that, I have to make a device file thusly:

# mknod /dev/softsynth c 10 26

I cannot figure out how to do that during the FAI install. I know that mknod 
is in my nfsroot. But putting that mknod command in a FAI script doesn't 
seem to work.
