Yeah - that helped alot - thanks! 

I was a bit confused, because debootstrap from sarge still holds some kind of 
"config" for etch and so i thought that i will do for etch too.
I will now have to go on with config files in /usr/local/share/fai.

Again thanks for all the help and suggestions!

Did you install the Ecth debootstrap? Sarge debootstrap cannot bootstrap Etch, 
because it doesn't have the necessary scripts.
This seems to change, so debootstrap will be generic enough so one debootstrap 
can bootstrap many, even newer versions as the one it is built for, but in 
these older versions, this isn't the case.

You need to either install the fai-distributions package from svn, or install 
the Etch debootstrap on your Sarge machine.
