FAI was broken in maverick because live-initramfs has been removed from the archive for maverick. I've uploaded the lucid version to the FAI PPA, which unbreaks FAI.
Another issue was that with maverick, the bootoptions 'boot=live root=/dev/nfs' causes a kernel panic before the nfsroot is mounted. Changing this to 'boot=live netboot=nfs' fixed it. I'm not exactly sure what the exact cause is, my current theory is that 'boot=live' tries to mount the rootfs via cifs but fails. After debugging the generated initramfs, I got the idea to play with the netboot parameter, which immediately worked for me. IOW: I've upgraded our student lab to install ubuntu/maverick with FAI. -- Gruesse/greetings, Reinhard Tartler, KeyID 945348A4
