I guess software-RAID is just hopelessly broken in that version. I have very little knowledge about the current state of affairs for Ubuntu, but I think you will want to upgrade to 3.4.7 at least. There have been numerous further fixes in experimental quite recently, but looking at the changelog there is a good chance that your problem has been addressed in stable already.
