In the past, I replaced the whole dhcp ipconfig in initramfs with udhcpc, which works pretty well on my setup. With ubuntu precise running fai 3.x.x I didn't apply any patches to support multiple nics...I have IPAPPEND2 enabled in pxelinux config and bootif is supported by live-boot.
