networking problem in initrd

I am using FAI  4.0.3 to install CenOS on some new hardware (Supermicro 
6027R-N3RF4 with  4-ports Intel i350). I ran several test installs on a 
virtual machine and that works fine.

On this Supermicro servers it fails to bring up the nfsroot.
ipconfig: no response after 15 sec.
And it drops me to a busybox shell
When I run ipconfig manually from the busybox shell. I get a quick 
response and the network is correctly configured.

Any ideas why it fails in the automated run?
