It worked. I copied it from
/usr/share/doc/fai-doc/examples/simple/hooks/setup.DEFAULT.sh and
renamed it setup.DEFAULT.

The newer version of hooks/setup.DEFAULT.sh include this line, to set
the short hostname:
# use short hostname instead of FQDN
export HOSTNAME=${HOSTNAME%%.*}
