I know that the rsync load is a major factor on kernel.org right now. With all the git trees (particularly the ones that people haven't packed recently), there's a lot of files in a lot of directories. If readdirplus would help this situation, it would definitely have a real world benefit. Obviously, I haven't done any measurements or attempted to quantify what the improvement would be. For those not familiar with a git repo, it has an 'objects' directory with 256 directories named 00 to ff.
