well, it looks like the problem is in the hashing routines. i turned on debugging in the autofs modules and have seen some anomalies. it looks like files are disappearing from the hash buckets, which is why the bitmap still shows them as used. i didn't notice much change in the 2.2 versions of this code, but i'll do a closer comparison to see if any buglets may have gotten squashed.
