Thank you for your reply.
Indeed, I can mount images without being root, but how about creating
devices? Also I would prefer that the files are owned by root.

For me, it's easier to patch the sources mk{iso,rom,cram,...}fs than an
image of Minix filesystem.

It looks like there is no easy solution :-(
