Woah, this is a fairly impressive change, and definitely a step in the
right direction.

I've imported it into the dev repository for now; eventually, we will
need to move the GUI into a separate project as well (Andrew already has
done that), but for the current update, this would be too big a change.

It's also pushed into the daily build.

I don't understand the GUI code well enough to comment, but I will test
the result this week.
