For info to developers:

Over the last few days, I've had a little time to address some portability
issues in the code, particularly as revealed by a Solaris another user.

I have been trickling these into "dev".  (And there may be a few more in
the days ahead.)  I hope I have done them cleanly (indeed, that the result
is cleaner all around for everyone) with sufficient comments in the code.

But if any patch causes any trouble, feel free to back it out; they should
all be independent of each other.  But preferably do so in an amended form
that includes a comment about why the original code was the way it was.

(Lars and I are chatting about one of them: ccdv and a seemingly
unnecessary explicitly stated 'gcc'.)
