I understand what the thread says - which is why I posted my findings on the list. As I said its 100% reproducable across both 32 and 64 bit versions of ubuntu (server) so any proposed fixes should be quick to test. I will dig a bit deeper and maybe try the g_thread_init() and g_type_init() approaches myself. I am developing on separate VM's at present whilst my production machine is limping along as a manually set up single node. As regards solutions I have nothing to lose at this point other than taking upstart out and recreating the init.d scripts I need as lsb RA's rather than upstart RA's. The current scripts have been hijkacked and replaced by calls to the upstart scripts thus losing their exits codes upon which the system relies.
