Ok thanks for that. But why is the install process looking for hg? It
strikes me as being a little bit odd that I should need version
control software in order to compile something.

it doesnt actually need it (you can ignore the errors) but we look for
hg in the process of extracting the ID of the revision being built -
this helps us identify _exactly_ what version you're running.

but we have fallbacks if hg isnt present

and i've improved the logic for the next release so that it wont complain at all

The ubuntu packages available have not been compiled with the options
I require. The machine heartbeat is being run on has a lot of custom
compiled software and as such apt thinks that most of the dependencies
are missing. I'd rather compile from source than "break" apt by using
the --force option to get everything on.
