What you need to check is your PAM configuration (I suppose that
you're using PAM for authentication). I haven't done this for a
long time, but I think that there's a heartbeat PAM configuration
in /etc/pam.d/hbmgmtd. Did you check
http://www.linux-ha.org/GuiGuide?
