Hmm... not entirely sure how this helps but hey.. here you go feel free to try the following :-) (carefully !)

echo $foo > /proc/sysrq-trigger

where $foo=

s -> sync disks
b-> reboots kernel (does not un-sync mounts !)
u-> unmount

and the fun ones..

l -> kills all running processes....
o-> shutdown system
