My clusters are all R1 style. I've only ever used STONITH directives in
ha.cf. Is another way to invoke STONITH available to my type of
clusters?

I am not sure about ha.cf, but a STONITH agent can be invoked from the
CRM.  Anything that's designed to happen after a failure is in the
province of STONITH.
