Hello Everyone,

i want to set up a cluster for 2 existing linux (debian) machines.
i want to make one active machine out of 2 - first priority
availability, second performance.

i have read some books ("clusterbau" von michael schwartzkopff [2010] or
"high availability" from oreilly [2008]) about the software and think i
understand the basics - but im in need to get additional infos about the
practice and what i must think about BEFORE get started.

The Services needed to set up more available are :

Asterisk PBX (depends on Network, ISDN, DSL and some other services) [no
much changing data]
DNS (Bind9) (not really heavy to set up i think) [only changing data-cache]
SAMBA and its Shares (depends on a network file system - drbd? [at this
time i use mdadm raid 10 with 2 tb]
VirtualBox with 2 Clones (depends on the data of the box, the drives -
at this time they are lying at the shares of samba)
1st clone --> Windows XP with no changing data, just a "grab and type
something box" [depends on virtualbox]
2nd clone --> Windows 2008 Server with ADS *and* SQLServer 2005
Enterprise (very important to be high available) [depends on virtualbox]
//many changing data!//
Nagios (hot really a problem to set up at ha)
intranet with apache2 (not really a prob)
exim4
and some system services that are needed, but not so important to be
written here. Thats it.

My Thoughts about this invorement looks like this:

I need 1 Network File System - i can use drbd and let the drive stay
where they are (in the nodes) or shell i use a nfs or some other solution?
Very Important is that the drive speed must ge guaranteed (sql
server) and in the best case i can speed it up.
I need three network cables, 1 crossover, 1 "data network for drbd" (if
i take drbd) and 1 data network segment for the normal connection.
I would be very happy if someone could tell me "the story" of planning
such a cluster.

Actually i think that there is no way to get a "intelligent" cluster
which balance the loads between the nodes (look at the sql server!!) in
my case, right?

Thanks much!

Stefan
