I see, so it's assuming it's got a comms failure and is trying to
recover from that. I suppose that works as long as the ass-sumption is
correct and it's not actual disk that's failed.

(I wonder how many times you can re-add a physically failing drive
before you get your data corrupted -- there must be a clever
probabilistic formula for that ;)
