Well, sheesh, it was selinux. Write that one down, folks. Selinux causes "error 6" problem when initializing the ring. And this is all because the RHEL 6 installer does not ask whether selinux should be enabled like the RHEL 5 installer does, so I didn' think to look (and would not have believed it anyway).
